Karen has immersed herself through involvement in many civic and community activities in a roll-up your sleeves way. She is an enthusiastic leader and is an extremely caring and compassionate person. She has been a tremendous role model and mentor for many. This has been recognized time and again.

Karen’s leadership style is best described as a passionate pursuit of excellence, paired with a uniquely compassionate style of leadership that mixes to make her special. Karen is one to jump in “on the ground floor” of new organizations. Since being on the Corona City Council, Karen has been the one to take the initiative on many things. There have been several new programs started because she saw a need.

Karen's ability to lead and empower those she works with, a true appreciation of diversity, and an unquenchable desire to give back to the community encourages values and integrity that resonate throughout the organizations she is involved in. Karen represents a rare mix of vision, passion, and integrity that creates a culture where everyone grows, everyone participates, and everyone wins.

As a mother of five children, her concern for good government and positive role models are top priorities.  Her involvement in the community led her to the public arena. Karen was the elected City Treasurer (1996-2002). She was first elected to the Corona City Council in 2002, and was successful in re-election bid in 2006. During almost eight years with the City Council Karen is in her second term as Mayor. Karen represents Corona on the Regional level in many agencies, and elected to leadership positions in several.

There is no question that Karen is very family oriented and always puts her family first.  Karen has been married to Bobby Spiegel for 25 years and has five young adult children, ranging from 19 to 24 years, who also are all involved in the community. She recently became a grandmother to Richard Joseph “RJ”.

Karen graduated from the California State University in Long Beach and did her graduate studies at Pepperdine University, receiving a Masters Degree and holds a Marriage Family Counseling (MFC) license. She worked for ten years at a residential treatment facility for delinquent, abused, neglected, and abandoned boys (age 11-17) who were referred by the courts, probation departments, and County Child Protective Services.

When she married Bobby in 1985, she came to Corona and worked in the family Electrical Contracting business, Corona Industrial Electric, Inc. until it closed in 1995. She was the self-taught Bookkeeper and Office Manager. Bobby and Karen then began Spiegel Enterprises & Publications, where she again self-taught her skills as the graphic designer for various publications, newsletters and business materials.
